Royal Caribbean’s 9-month Ultimate World cruise, which quickly went viral, is finally returning to port after what was the adventure of a lifetime for some 650-some passengers who paid between $59,999 and $117,599.
“Nothing can prepare you for nine months,” Joe Martucci, 67, told USA Today about the epic 60-country trip that took in South America, Antarctica, China, Madagascar and many other far-flung destinations. The extended excursion was set to end on Tuesday.
“It’s always been a dream of my family to travel the world,” 26-year-old South African passenger Amike Oosthuizen previously told The Sun.
However, even dreams can be tiring. Houston traveler Adita Larson described the time at sea as “exhausting.”
Other travelers, like 47-year-old Brandee Lake, said there wasn’t much calm on the water. She described three quarters of a year as fast.
“It’s a blur,” Lake told USA Today. “We don’t know where we were yesterday; we don’t know where we will go tomorrow”.
As for packing, she even said that her three large suitcases plus luggage were too much.
“I scaled it down, and it’s still too much,” Lake said. “It’s kind of like your closet: you only really wear about 10% to 20% of it.”
Martiucci added that he quickly felt at home, too, and he could even do big tasks like buying a car remotely to use later.
“We’ve been able to function,” he said.
The cruise, which departed from Miami last December, became a huge hit on TikTok after couples like Joe and Audrey Martiucci documented their daily life on board. The couple became a worldwide sensation under their Spendingourkidsmoney account.
“We had people text us to say, ‘Thank you so much for taking me on this trip,'” Audrey told CNN, recalling fans greeting her during a stop in Halifax, Canada.
Even those who continued the events from dry land gathered their own TikTok followers, such as the United Kingdom’s Beth Anne Fletcher.
“If you’re interested in travel and you’re also interested in psychology and people, what more could you want?” she told CNN, noting that people on the cruise went out of their way to meet her while in Southampton, England.

“It was such a surreal day because we’ve talked about these people for so long, and then to spend time with them, it was like being with old friends,” Fletcher said.
Lake agreed that making friends was also a natural process. “I mean, obviously, it’s like any other community,” she said.
“You have people you’re really close to, some of them are famous, maybe some are not your people, but nothing bad. You just have your group that you naturally gel with.”
Even if things weren’t so weird and people wanted time alone, “there are a lot of spaces on the ship that you can go and hide,” Audrey Martucci told CNN. Plus the one person cab always got the job done.
