Department of Health praised for ‘it’s okay to drink at work’ campaign: ‘Let it out’

Queensland Health has been praised for its “hilarious” handling of what is still considered by many to be a taboo act: taking a poo at work.

An Instagram video this month featured the statement “it’s okay to cry at work” over a montage of Lisa Frank’s images of dolphins, rainbows and unicorns set to a Neick Sanders song. Beethovenattracted 22,000 likes and thousands of comments.

A similar, albeit simpler, approach on Facebook – a post that read “Out to Work”. The discussion received an equally enthusiastic response, with more than 3,000 comments and 5,000 likes.

Both posts featured captioned advice from Queensland Health on how to achieve a “stress-free public toilet” experience.

“Many people find it difficult to defecate in public toilets. But we’re here to tell you that it’s definitely okay to go #2 at work! – reads the inscription.

“Continuously ignoring your need to poop can lead to bowel obstruction, hemorrhoids, and other serious problems. So it’s better to let it out than to keep it in.

“If you find it extremely difficult to hate around other people, you may have parcopresis.

“Sometimes called ‘poo paranoia,’ people with this condition have an overwhelming fear of being judged by others because of the sounds or smells associated with crying. As a result, they may experience symptoms such as increased heart rate , sweating or vomiting

To ease paranoia or poverty anxiety, the department suggested people “remember that everyone cries” and “visualize someone famous on the toilet (like Taylor Swift).”

Other recommendations included avoiding food or drink that “might trigger your bowels”, bringing a “small scented spray to the toilet” and “breathing deeply or doing a short meditation exercise”.

Facebook and Instagram users, as well as health and marketing experts, have praised the department’s “world-leading” social media strategy and its use of humor to help normalize healthy human behavior.

“Very good team. Just when I think it can’t get any better, one Facebook user commented.

“QLD makes sensational health updates!” wrote another.

A third agreed: “I love these qld public health campaigns, they make me laugh.â€

On Instagram, comments shared the same sentiment: “Idk (don’t know) who is the dedicated person on Instagram for health QLD but my god you are doing a great job and you need a raise .â€

“This is ridiculous,” said another.

“Didn’t the government put an image of Taylor Swift pouring into my brain?” someone else wrote.

Founder and creative director of advertising agency Campaign Edge, Dee Madigan, described Queensland Health’s social media account as “world leading”.

“What it shows is a department where staff aren’t afraid to do things like that, because often government department social media is so safe, it’s actually just bland and boring,” she said. The Guardian.

“It’s actually a serious message, they’re just using social media in the right way to deliver it.

“Just because something is a serious subject doesn’t mean you can’t use humor to get into it.”

A Queensland Health spokesman said the campaign “addressed a common but often unspoken health concern, aiming to normalize discussions about bodily functions”.

“Addressing what can often be considered taboo health topics reduces shame, embarrassment and fear, while also helping to entertain, educate and promote healthier behaviours,” they said.
